While We Sing Together
While We Sing Together is an independent documentary I co-created with Jamie McGough, telling the story of Coventry City Football Club and the supporters who stayed with the club through its extraordinary fall and rise.
The film charts almost three decades of Coventry City history. From relegation from the Premier League in 2001, through financial turmoil, points deductions, administration and years spent playing away from Coventry, to the club's remarkable journey back to the Premier League.
Rather than simply retelling the results on the pitch, we wanted the documentary to be about what a football club means to the people who follow it. Through interviews with supporters and those who witnessed some of the defining moments in the club's history, the film explores loyalty, identity and what it means to keep supporting your club when almost everything around it is falling apart.
The project was independently produced and initially screened in Coventry before being released online. With no paid advertising, While We Sing Together reached more than 10,000 views within its first week, alongside coverage from BBC News, BBC Midlands Today, BBC CWR and the Coventry Telegraph.
The response to the documentary went far beyond what we expected. It led to national radio appearances, interest from people within the television and documentary industry, and even contact from a former New York Times journalist interested in telling the wider story of Coventry City's return and the supporters around it.
For me, the project became proof of what can be achieved by finding a story worth telling and simply going out and making it. What began as an independent film about the football club we support became something watched and shared by thousands of people.
